Scientists have found that exercise promotes the growth of mitochondria in the brain. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cells and are responsible for converting energy from food into forms of energy that can be used by the body. Well-functioning mitochondria are critical for health and longevity. Decreases in mitochondrial function in the brain can cause declines in mental function with age. In athletes, well-functioning brain mitochondria prevent fatigue. Mark Davis and colleagues from the University of South Carolina, found that treadmill exercise increased mitochondrial development in the brain. Exercise plays an important role in maximizing the health and performance of the nervous system and may prevent age – related dementia.
