Nutritional Q & A
Fat & Weight Loss
MICHAEL J. PORTER JR., CH.T.

Ever have questions about health and nutrition? It's sometimes difficult to sift through all the nutritional information available and separate the fact from the fiction. However, we're here to help you do just that, one question at a time. This issue's question deals with fat:
Question: "I've always been told fat is the real enemy when it comes to health and weight loss. If that's the case, isn't the best way to lose weight to eliminate fat from my diet?"
Answer: No! While some fats--like trans-fats--are unhealthy, certain fats can help promote weight loss and good health. For instance, fats give flavor to food and help satisfy your hunger. Essential fats like Omega-3 actually speed up the fat-burning process. Fat is also an essential nutrient. It provides energy, carries certain vitamins to your bloodstream, and promotes growth. Generally speaking, getting about 30% of your calories from fat is a realistic and healthy goal. Healthy fats are also available in a variety of foods. You can check with you local Positive Changes center for more information on foods containing healthful fats.
