Exercise With Ease

Exercise Increases Fat-Burning During Weight Loss

By Michael J. Porter Jr., CHT.

People can lose weight through caloric restriction, increasing expenditure through exercise, or a combination of exercise and diet. However, people who lose weight through caloric restriction alone typically experience decreases in lean body mass and resting metabolic rate (rate of caloric, expenditure during the day). A University of Pittsburg study led by Francesca Amati and Brett Goodpaster found that exercise training or exercise training plus weight loss (through calorie-restricted diets) increased fat use during exercise in previously sedentary, obese older adults. Dieting alone had no effect on fat use. Sixty-four overweight older adults participated in a weight-loss diet, moderate submaximal exercise program, or a combination of the two. Exercise training has long-term metabolic effects that help people maintain lost weight and prevent weight gain. The American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommend that people exercise at moderate intensities for at least 30 minutes, five days per week.
