Nutrition Q & A

Long Term Weight Loss

Q:  What is the best approach to long-term weight control?

Fat Burning NutritionA:  People lose weight on almost any low-calorie diet, but which diet is best for sustained weight management? A University of Illinois study showed that people lost more fat in 4 months eating a moderate protein diet (30 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fat) than a mixed diet recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (15 percent protein, 55 percent carbohydrates, 15 percent fat). Weight loss was 18 vs. 15 pounds at 4 months and 20 vs. 16 pounds following an 8-month maintenance period. Increased protein intake helped maintain muscle mass during weight loss, suppressed hunger, and had a more favorable effect on blood fats than a mixed diet lower in protein.
