7 Laws of Nutrition for a Healthy Mind & Body

By Michael J. Porter, Jr., CHT.

These days there's a lot of conflicting information available about nutrition. With so many theories and diet plans to choose from, it's sometimes hard to know what you actually need to do to get healthy and stay healthy. With that in mind, we've put together seven basic nutrition "laws" you can follow to maintain a healthy mind and body.

1. Water is the elixir of life.
Water is the most abundant nutrient found in the body, accounting for 60-70% of body weight. For that reason, it's also the most important nutrient in the body. In the case of water, more is definitely better!

2. Eat balanced meals.
As in every other area of life, balance is key in nutrition. Many people try to control their weight by eating only certain foods or by avoiding certain foods. The fact is, that approach doesn't work. The key to maintaining health and vitality in your life is to make sure your meals have the proper balance of protein, fiber and essential fats.

3. Always Eat Slowly.
It takes up to 15 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that you're full. By eating slowly, you give your brain time to catch up with your stomach. At the same time, you'll feel satisfied even while eating less. In the case of food, less is sometimes more.

4. Vegetables are builders.
Raw vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals and enzymes, so they form much of the fabric of a healthy body. Because cooking robs vegetables of many of their healthy properties, eating raw or lightly cooked vegetables is best.

5. Get enough protein.
Providing the body with adequate protein at each meal is an important part of your weight-loss success. Protein helps balance blood sugar and stimulates fat burning.

6. Include essential fats in your diet.
Essential fatty acids will help stimulate fat burning, are energizing and help you exercise longer.

7. If it comes from a can, bottle or wrapper (i.e., processed), it's probably not as nutritious as whole, fresh foods.
Need we say more?
